White Oyster Mushroom Cultivation Guide

For tropical areas like Indonesia, oyster mushroom cultivation is very suitable. The initial capital required is not large and can be done gradually. The most difficult thing in the process of cultivating oyster mushrooms is making baglog or media that has been inoculated with mushroom seeds.

This mushroom is called an oyster, so it is called the oyster mushroom. Oyster mushrooms are white in color and semi-circular in shape. In nature, oyster mushrooms are found on rotting logs, therefore, oyster mushrooms are also called wood mushrooms.

In oyster mushroom cultivation activities, there are two main stages, namely making the planting medium and inoculating the mushrooms. The next stage is to grow the mycelium into fruiting bodies.

The following are the steps for cultivating oyster mushrooms:

PREPARATION OF MUSHROOM HOUSES

The place where mushrooms are cultivated is called a mushroom house or kumbung. The mushroom house must be able to maintain temperature and humidity to support fungal growth.
The shelves in the mushroom house can be made of bamboo or wood. These shelves are placed in a row and then the shelves are separated by an aisle for maintenance.

The height of the space between shelves is not less than 40 cm, with levels of 2-3 levels. The length of each shelf segment is 1 meter with a shelf width of 40 cm. One shelf section can accommodate 70-80 baglogs.

Before putting it into the mushroom house, prepare the baglog by:
  1. Clean the mushroom housing and shelves from dirt.
  2. Apply lime and fungicide inside the mushroom house, then leave it for two days before putting the baglog into the mushroom house.
  3. Put the baglog into the mushroom house when the medicinal smell has disappeared.

BAGLOG PREPARATION

As explained above, baglog is a medium used to grow mushrooms. The material used to make this media is sawdust because oyster mushrooms are wood fungi. Then the saw is put in plastic and shaped into a cylinder, and one end is given a hole for the fungus to grow.

In large-scale cultivation, mushroom farmers generally make their own baglog. However, beginner farmers generally use baglog purchased from other parties because their capital is still limited.

BAGLOG CARE

In arranging the baglog on the shelf, there are two ways you can do it, namely by placing the baglog vertically with the hole at the top or horizontally with the hole at the side. Horizontal arrangement makes harvesting easier and the mushrooms are safer from water splashes, but horizontal arrangement takes up more space.

OYSTER MUSHROOM CARE

Meanwhile, the steps for caring for oyster mushrooms are as follows:
  • Open the ring and baglog cover paper first before the baglog is arranged. After that, let it sit for about 5 days. Water to increase humidity if the floor is made of soil.
  • Then cut the end of the baglog to provide wider growth space. Avoid watering for three days and only water the floor.
  • Watering is done with a sprayer and should be in the form of mist, not water droplets. Water 2-3 times a day, depending on the humidity and temperature of the mushroom house. However, make sure the mushroom house temperature is in the range of 16-24℃.

HARVESTING

Generally, around 1-2 weeks after opening the lid of the baglog, the mushrooms will grow and can be harvested. This mushroom baglog can be harvested up to 5-8 times if cared for properly. Then, the baglog can be composted or thrown away. From baglog weighing 1 kg, around 0.7-0.8 kg of mushrooms will be produced.

Of course, harvesting is done on mushrooms that have enlarged, which are characterized by tapered edges and a clean white cap. If the harvest period is missed, even just one day, the mushroom cap will burst and the color will turn brownish yellow and mushrooms like this will not last long. The distance between harvests is generally around 2-3 weeks.

So, that's the article regarding the guide to cultivating white oyster mushrooms, good luck and good luck.
