Red Ginger Cultivation Method
On this occasion we will provide information for all of you about Red Ginger Cultivation . Pay attention to the information we provide below as your knowledge in cultivation. Hopefully it will be useful and as a motivation for you in your efforts.
Red Ginger - Now who doesn't know Ginger. A very popular plant in Indonesia that is used for drinks such as sekoteng, bandrek and ginger wedang. Almost every night, especially in urban areas, we are often greeted by street sellers of the drink. The use of ginger is so widespread because it turns out that it has many benefits. Not only is it used as one of the complementary spices for cooking, but it also turns out that many are used for purposes in the field of health, especially for the type of Red Ginger.

Cultivation of Red Ginger
Growing conditions
- Climate: Ginger plants need rainfall between 2,500-4,000 mm/year
- At the age of 2.5 - 7 months need enough sunlight. That is, this plant should be in an open place so that there is enough sunlight throughout the day
- The optimal air temperature is 20 - 35 degrees Celsius
- In general, it can grow on soil acidity with a pH of 4.3 - 7.4, except for the Elephant Ginger type at a pH of 6.8 - 7.0
- Grows well on fertile and loose soil, as well as containing a lot of humus.
Preparation of Seeds or Seeds of Red Ginger
Planting can be done from red ginger seeds that are ready to plant or have sprouted between 5-10 cm. But when it is not available, we can sow seeds from rhizomes. When sowing yourself, pay attention to the quality of the rhizomes to be sown. The rhizomes to be planted must come from a parent that is old enough, the surface of the rhizomes is shiny and not deformed and it does not look like it has been attacked by pests.
Rhizome Preparation Technique
The rhizomes that will be planted (of course after selection), are cleaned and then dried but be careful not to dry too much. Then stored for 1 - 1.5 months. Break the rhizome by hand, where each cut has 3 - 5 buds, then dry again for 1/2 to 1 day (check the weather). Then put the rhizome pieces into the sack. Then make a PHEFOC HCS solution , with a dose of 1 PHEFOC bottle cap dissolved in 14 liters of water, then add 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, stir until smooth and leave for 15 minutes.
The rhizome pieces that are already in the sack are then dipped into the PHEFOC solution for 15 minutes. Remove and drain. The purpose of immersion with PHEFOC is for the seeds to be freed from the original pathogen of the disease and have a higher resistance to disease attack. While waiting for the draining process, make the SOT HCS solution with dosage: 5 SOT bottle caps dissolved in 14 liters of water, and 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar are added. Stir until smooth and leave for 15 minutes. After being sufficiently drained, the future seeds were then soaked for approximately 6 hours in the SOT HCS solution that had been made earlier. The purpose of soaking with SOT is so that the seeds can grow well and healthy, especially in the early stages of planting. After 6 hours, the sack containing the seeds is then drained until dry. And the seeds are ready to be sown.
Rhizome Seeding Technique
Several ways can be done for sowing ginger seeds from this rhizome. By using a wooden box system or by making beds. This time I review sowing using a wooden box. Make a wooden box measuring for example 50 x 100 cm with a height of 10 cm. It is shaped like a tray. Do you know the tray ?
- Make a soil mixture for seedling media with mixed ingredients: soil and bokashi fertilizer (see how to make Bokashi Fertilizer ), the ratio is soil: bokashi fertilizer = 3:1
- Then put the soil mixture in the box and spread it evenly
- Embed pieces of ginger rhizome into the soil. Then cover thinly with soil or dry leaves
- Carry out care by watering the seedling media with water twice a day
- The time required for sowing ranges between 2-4 weeks.
Ginger Cultivation Techniques
The ginger planting technique is to utilize the planting media in polybags or sacks. The technique of using polybags or sacks is also referred to by many as a way of cultivating verticulture plants, meaning the cultivation of plants vertically or in tiers.
Seed Planting
- Make a mixture between soil and bokashi with a ratio of 3:1.
- Put the soil mixture into a sack with a height of approximately 15 cm or 1/5 the height of the sack. To make it easier, first bend the upper surface of the sack.
- Take the ginger rhizomes from seeding, break the ginger rhizomes by hand into 2-3 segments, where each segment has at least 2 buds
- Ginger seeds are then planted 3-5 cm into the soil in the sack. Each sack can be filled with several planting points, arrange for example 2 - 3 planting points. On average, he said, about 200 grams of seeds are enough for one sack.
- Arrange the storage of the sack in a position higher than the surface of the ground. Make a long column of soil mounds, each column mound can be filled with 2-3 rows of sacks.
Ginger Plant Care and Maintenance
This activity includes watering plants, giving fertilizer and controlling diseases
- At the initial stage, water regularly and routinely in the morning and afternoon for about a week, aiming to prevent the buds from drying out and wilting
- Furthermore, watering is done once a day except in drought conditions, preferably watering is done twice
- When the plant is 2 - 4 weeks old, spray or water with SOT fermentation. Previously, ferment the solution with a dosage of: 5 SOT bottle caps + 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar + 2 liters of animal urine + 2 liters of liquid animal feces. Fermentation is done for 24 hours, then dissolve in 15 liters of water. Then just used to spray or water.
- Spraying with SOT alternates with PHEFOC at intervals of 2-4 weeks
- At the age of 2-3 months or if ginger rhizomes appear on the surface, fill with a mixture of soil and bokashi (the ratio of soil: fixed bokashi is 3:1), about 10 cm high
- Always weed the planting media from pests in the form of weeds/grass so as not to interfere with rhizome growth
- Piling is done repeatedly until the ginger plant is about 8 months old or until the sack is completely filled with soil
- The average optimal age for planting ginger ranges between 8 - 10 months, marked by the leaves starting to dry
- With a planting pattern like this, it is expected that the ginger harvest per sack will reach at least 10 kg.
Pest and Disease Management
The pests that most often attack ginger plants are ladybugs, root crawlers and beetles. While diseases in the form of bacterial wilt, rhizome rot, and leaf spot.
