Benefits of Earthworms
- Including animals that are disgusting for some people, but for some people this can also be a blessing. Earthworms are low-level animals because they do not have a spine (invertebrates). Earthworms belong to the class Oligochaeta. The most important family of this class Megascilicidae & Lumbricidae Earthworms are not alien animals to our society, especially to rural communities. But these animals have a very amazing potential for human life and welfare.

Types of Earthworms

The species most widely developed by humans are from the families Megascolicidae & Lumbricidae with the genera Lumbricus, Eiseinia, Pheretima, Perionyx, Diplocardi & Lidrillus. Several types of earthworms that are now widely farmed include: Pheretima, Periony & Lumbricus. These three types of earthworms like organic matter derived from manure and plant remains. Lumbricus earthworms have a flat body shape. The number of segments owned is around 90-195 and the klitelum is located in segments 27-32. Usually this type can not compete with other types so that the body is smaller. But when bred, its body size can match or exceed other types. Pheretima earthworms have 95-150 segments. The clitellum is located in segments 14-16. Its body is long and cylindrical purplish red.

Earthworms belonging to the Pheretima species include red worms, koot worms and necklace worms. The Perionyx type earthworm is dark purple to red-brown in color with the number of segments 75-165 and its clitelum is located in segments 13 & 17. These worms are usually rather spoiled so that their maintenance requires more serious attention. Lumbricus Rubellus worms have more advantages than the other two types above, because of their high productivity (weight gain, egg/pupling production & production of vermicompost worms) and do not move much.
