Cultivation of maggots using tofu dregs
These caterpillars are always associated with dirty and disgusting things. But grubs actually have a high protein content. Therefore, maggots can be used as alternative feed for fish, chickens, birds, goats and even cows.
Breeding and cultivating maggots can be used as a source of business and side income. Does not require too much capital but promises profits of up to ten million rupiah per month. In addition to financial gain, cultivating maggots is also one of the ways to reduce the accumulation of organic waste.
Getting to know Maggots
Maggots are the larvae of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens, Stratimydae, Diptera) or BSF. Although it is a family of flies, the size of the BSF, known as the army fly, is longer and larger. Although it is from the family of flies, BSF does not transmit bacteria, disease, or even germs to humans.
As with maggots, maggots are ecologically useful in the decomposition process of organic matter. Maggots eat vegetables and fruits. Not only fresh fruit and vegetables, maggots also consume vegetable and fruit waste. Therefore manggot is very suitable for use in organic waste management.

As many as 10,000 maggots can consume 1 kg of organic waste in 24 hours. Maggots multiply very quickly.
In addition to being useful for reducing organic waste, maggots also have economic value, that is, they can be a source of animal feed and fertilizer. Maggot contains high protein and good nutritional content for fish and poultry feed. Maggots have a protein level of around 43% if they are whole, while if made into pellets the protein level is between 30% and 40%.
Compared to worms, maggots are more profitable as animal feed because they reproduce faster and can be harvested quickly. From hatching until it can be used to make livestock, the time is only about 17 days.
Meanwhile, organic waste that is not eaten by maggots can still be used as a source of compost or organic fertilizer. Although it is made from organic waste, the fertilizer produced does not smell.
Animal feed and fertilizer produced from maggots are very suitable for animal husbandry and organic farming. The use of maggots can suppress the use of chemical feed and fertilizers.
Fish, poultry and vegetables that use maggots are healthier than the same commodities on the market because they are all organic. It turns out that not only maggots and eggs, flies that die after mating are also sold.
Flies are the last revolution from caterpillars. In general, it only takes a few days for the caterpillars to turn into flies. For fish farmers, these maggots are a nutritious and very useful feed.
Benefits of maggots :
- Fish feed
- Feed poultry such as chickens, turkeys and ducks
- Maggot works as an excellent substitute for fishmeal in animal feed production.
- Plant fertilizer
- Solutions for waste management.
Breeding caterpillars requires simple tools. There are several media that can be used to grow maggots, one of which is tofu. Here are the procedures for cultivating mangosteen with tofu residue.
Tools and Materials
Prepare a large bucket with a hole measuring 1-2 cm and not too close to the bottom. In addition to the bucket, we can also use a high tub so that the harvest yield is more and maximum, because the maggots will only stick to the surface.
Then prepare various other materials such as rope and tofu dregs as the main media. A rope is used to hang a bucket that is a container for maggots. This is done in order to invite flies and make it easier to do the breeding process.
Breeding of Flies
Cultivation of maggots is certainly a series of quite disturbing processes because we will deliberately breed fly larvae into maggots to be cultivated.
Flies are the parent used. The flies are left free to swarm the tofu residue that we put in the container that is left, so that the larvae can grow there
The tofu residue used can be mixed with a little salted fish so that the aroma is sharper and it is easier to attract the flies to gather.
Leave it in the bucket in an open state. Flies that gather will produce eggs in a suitable place. In a matter of days the maggots will accumulate in the container.
Harvest
Usually after the eggs are laid, they will hatch into larvae from the next 6 to 7 days. And after 7 days the maggot will start to be seen and can be harvested immediately.
It usually takes up to 2 weeks from the beginning of the tool making process to harvest. Harvesting will be done manually using manggot traps, to make it easier.
To reduce the unpleasant aroma, separate the media from the grubs after the larvae grow. Thus we can directly clean and harvest maggots.
