How To Breed The Right Crickets?

In Indonesia there are 100 types of crickets. However, everything has not been mapped out perfectly. The types that are usually used as livestock pets are the Gryllus testaclus and Gryllus mitratus crickets. In addition, there are still many crickets that can be raised for various other purposes, such as for fighting and hobbies. 

Crickets are herbivores. If it is in its habitat it usually eats young leaves such as grass. In the livestock environment, you can feed green vegetables that have a lot of water content such as lettuce, mustard greens, spinach, papaya leaves and cucumbers. Here is how to raise crickets properly that you should know. 

1. Determining The Location

The first way to raise crickets is to determine the location. That is, you must know the environment that crickets like. You should also know that crickets like a shady, quiet and calm environment and an environment that has good circulation to adjust the room temperature. 

Do not keep it in a noisy and crowded place, for example in a market or on the side of a highway. You can choose an environment that is far from the crowd. The room for keeping crickets should also not be exposed to direct sunlight.

However, the room for raising crickets must also be far from trees so that it can absorb the sun's heat. When you determine the location of crickets, make sure the location is far from the chicken coop that can prey on crickets.

2. Making The Cage

The next step is to make a cage for crickets. When making the cage, you can make it from a board or plywood formed into a box with a size of 100 x 60 cm and a height of only 30-40 cm. Apply glue to every corner and joint of the box. 

This is so that the newly hatched crickets cannot come out through the connection gaps because the crickets are very small in size. Next, on the top surface, you have to make it open and close using hinges. 

3. Doing A Cricket Nursery

The most important stages of cricket farming are choosing cricket seeds that are not deformed, healthy, not sick, and are only 10 to 20 days old. It must also be known that a good candidate for breeding crickets is crickets that have been caught in their habitat or in the wild.  

Usually these crickets have a better body resistance. There are several characteristics of good cricket brooders, such as: 

• Has long antennae, shiny body, complete limbs, agile and can jump far. 
• Do not choose crickets that when held release fluid from the rectum or mouth. 
• There is an ovipositor behind the tail of the female parent. 
• A loud creak on the male parent and the wings and back are rough and bumpy. 
• The way to tell the difference between male and female crickets is that you can see the tail. Male crickets only have 2 tails and female crickets have 3 tails. 

4. Mating Crickets

The next way to raise crickets is to marry crickets. Before doing so, make sure you have a place for him. The place is better separated from the rearing place for the child. Don't forget to make a cage that is similar to its natural habitat.

You can make walls using white cement or clay and sprinkle dry leaves. Usually the crickets to be bred must come from the same type. If they are of different types, then marriage cannot occur. When mating, enter the male and female sires in a ratio of 10:2.

Make sure you have prepared a tub filled with soil to serve as a spawning ground. During this process, the male brood will continue to make a creaking sound and the fertilized female will immediately lay eggs. The eggs are usually placed in a container filled with soil or sand. 

Cricket eggs will hatch after 7 to 10 days, starting from the mating done. A maximum of 5 days after the female parent lays eggs, you can separate the eggs. This is useful to prevent the cricket brood from eating their own eggs. 

5. Raising Crickets

At this stage, you have to give it good food for crickets. You can give artificial feed, pellets or vegetables such as mustard greens, katuk leaves, carrots, papaya leaves, gambas and others. The process of giving vegetables to crickets follows the rules, namely on the first day to the tenth day.

Give the feed every two days. Then, on the eleventh to the thirtieth day, you can give it every two days. In addition, when it is more than thirty days, you no longer have to feed him vegetables.
