Manufacture of Bokashi Fertilizer on Agricultural and Household Scale

Some of you must have heard of bokashi fertilizer. Then what is bokashi fertilizer? Bokashi fertilizer itself is a type of organic fertilizer that was first popular in Japan.

The name 'bokashi' itself is taken from a Japanese term which means gradual change. Compared to compost which is often made conventionally, the manufacture of bokashi fertilizer is claimed to be faster.

This is certainly very profitable, especially if you need organic fertilizer in large quantities but its manufacture is limited by time.

How to Make Bokashi Fertilizer

Agricultural

Then how to make organic fertilizer from Japan on this one? For those of you who are curious about how to make fertilizer on an agricultural and household scale, here are the manufacturing steps that you should pay attention to.

Agricultural Scale Bokasi Fertilizer Manufacturing

The following are manufacturing steps that you can apply to get 1 ton of fertilizer.

Preparation of Decomposing Microorganisms (EM4)

The first thing that must be done when making bokashi fertilizer is the preparation of decomposing microorganisms.

You don't need to bother cultivating or cultivating these microorganisms because on the market there is already a very well-known decomposing microorganism product, namely EM4.

Various types of microorganisms contained in EM4 include Actinomycetes, yeast, and also Lactobacillus sp.

To carry out the process of making bokashi fertilizer, later you only need to mix the EM4 solution into the ingredients used in making fertilizer.

Fertilizer Manufacturing

The ingredients used to make this one fertilizer are very easy. To make fertilizer on an agricultural or household scale, you can adjust it according to the volume of the base material.

Some of the materials that can be used in the manufacture of this fertilizer include crop residues, straw waste and others. Several steps can be taken in the process of making bokashi fertilizer, including:
  • Prepare the basic ingredients for making fertilizer consisting of 600 kg of dry livestock manure, 100 kg of humus soil, 50 kg of husk charcoal, 200 kg of straw or crop residues, 1 kg of sugar, and 1 liter of EM4 solution.
  • Make a hole as a place for decomposition with a size of 2 x 1 meter with a depth of 30-50 cm.
  • Chop up the ingredients for making fertilizers such as straw and leaves. After that, mix the chopped with other ingredients evenly using a shovel. To enrich the nutrients in the fertilizer, you can add ash and lime.
  • Dissolve 1 liter of EM4 with 200 liters of water and 1 kg of sugar. After mixed well, pour the solution on the raw material. Stir until the EM4 solution is evenly mixed. Adjust the humidity of the material with a moisture content of about 30-40%.
  • Put the fermented ingredients into the hole then cover with a tarp and let stand for 1-2 weeks. The maximum temperature for fermentation is 45˚ Therefore, you must control it regularly. If you feel the temperature is too hot, then stir the ingredients until the temperature begins to decrease.

Household Scale Bokashi Fertilizer Manufacturing

If the manufacture of bokashi fertilizer on an agricultural scale uses straw and crop residues, then the manufacture of household scale fertilizer can use kitchen waste or food scraps.

Methods of manufacture that must be done to make household scale fertilizer include:
  • Prepare materials for making fertilizer such as vegetable and fruit residue, food scraps, chicken bones, fish, 10 ml of EM4, 5 kg of sawdust, and also 5 kg of husk charcoal.
  • Because the production of Bokasi fertilizer on a household scale is less than on an agricultural scale, you only need to prepare a plastic barrel measuring approximately 200 liters. To remove the composted liquid, make a hole in the bottom of the barrel,
  • Chop and finely chop the ingredients used in the manufacture of fertilizers and mix them with sawdust, bran, and husk charcoal.
  • Add the EM4 solution made from a mixture of 10 ml of EM4 and 1 liter of water. Don't forget to add 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar as food for microorganisms.
  • Cover the plastic barrel with a cloth. Keep the temperature of the compost material not exceeding 45˚ The bokashi fertilizer is ripe for about 5-7 days. The characteristics of the finished fertilizer are the smell and the texture that has turned into soil.

Those were some of the ways that can be done in making bokashi fertilizer easily and quickly.

By utilizing microorganism products, the composting process can be faster than making ordinary compost. Hopefully this article is useful and can add to your insight. Good luck.
